7 Foods to Add to a Cystic Fibrosis Diet

Cystic fibrosis is one such inherited chronic condition that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system, and other organs in the body. In cystic fibrosis, the cells that produce mucus, sweat, and digestive juices are affected severely. Foods rich in iron are beneficial for people with cystic fibrosis, and this includes liver, tuna, lamb, seafood, eggs, beef, and turkey. Iron is instrumental in fighting off infection and ensures better blood flow with oxygen-carrying red blood cells.
5. Calcium
People with cystic fibrosis are advised to consume foods rich in calcium as it is responsible for maintaining bone health and reduces the risk of developing osteoporosis. Patients of this condition are susceptible to osteoporosis, so they are advised to include dairy products like high-fat yogurt, whole milk, and high-fat cheese in their diet.

People diagnosed with cystic fibrosis experience high amounts of airway inflammation in the lungs, making them vulnerable to bacterial infection, which can be quite detrimental to their already frail health. Fruits and vegetables are a rich source of antioxidants and are instrumental in staving off bacterial infections.
7. Fiber
Foods rich in fiber promote gut health and reduce the risk of intestinal blockages, making them great for cystic fibrosis patients. People diagnosed with cystic fibrosis need more fat and calories than others. So, they won’t have to harbor any guilt when ordering a cheeseburger with a side of fries once in a while.
